Marco began his scientific journey at the University of Padua, Italy where he successfully received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Food Science and Technology from the Department of Agriculture. It was during his Master's thesis work that he joined Dr. Tim Sharbel’s group at the Leibniz Institute for Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK) in Germany. From that point on, he decided to follow a research path in evolution and asexual reproduction and carried out his PhD in apomictic specific gene expression in the genus Ranunculus at the IPK in collaboration with Heidelberg University.

Immediately after, he made the move to the other side of the ocean and joined the Global Institute for Food Security in the role of Lab Manager for the Seed and Developmental Biology group led by Sharbel.

Besides running the day-to-day operations of the lab, Marco is in charge of team and resource management as well as project coordination. In addition, he is keeping a high scientific profile, collaborating with Postdoctoral Fellows at GIFS and in Germany, performing Bioinformatics analysis as well as wet lab work.
